Where can I exchange money in Morocco?

Morocco's official currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Dirhams can't be obtained outside Morocco, so you'll need to change money when you arrive.

Where to change money?

  • Airport: There are exchange offices and ATMs at every airport. The rate is reasonable, ideal for your first few days.
  • Banks: They offer a good exchange rate, but there are often queues and limited opening hours.
  • Exchange offices: You'll find them in the tourist areas of Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca and other cities.
  • Hotels and riads: Some offer an exchange service, but the rate is usually less favourable.

ATMs

ATMs are available in every city. They accept international cards (Visa, Mastercard). In rural areas and the desert they're harder to find, so always carry cash.

Cards are accepted in hotels, restaurants and large shops, but in the souks, small markets and rural areas you'll need cash.

It depends on the tour and your spending. For an all-inclusive tour: €200–300 per person for meals, tips and shopping. More if you do extra excursions.

Do you tip in Morocco?

It's not compulsory but it's customary. In restaurants: 5–10%. In hotels: 20–50 MAD per suitcase. On tours: €10–15 per person for the driver/guide.

Are prices negotiable?

Yes, in souks and small shops. Prices in hotels, restaurants and fixed-price shops are not. Haggling is part of Moroccan culture.

Which is cheaper: euros or dollars?

US dollars usually get a better exchange rate than euros. Bring dollars if you can, but euros are also accepted.

Are there banks in the souks?

Not inside the souks, but there are banks and ATMs on the main streets around them. Ask at your riad/hotel for the nearest ATM.

Can you use PayPal in Morocco?

PayPal isn't widely used. Better to use a credit card or cash. Some large hotels and restaurants accept PayPal, but it's not common.

Is there a withdrawal limit at ATMs?

Yes, usually 500–1000 MAD per day (about €50–100). If you need more, go to a bank during office hours.

Is it a good idea to change all your money at once?

No. Change what you need for the first few days and change more as you go. That way you avoid changing too much and losing out on fees.
