The Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) desert is the most visited in Morocco. Here's how to get there from Marrakech and Fes.

From Marrakech to Merzouga

The distance is about 560 km and the journey takes roughly 9–10 hours. Your options are:

  • Private tour by 4x4 or minivan: The most comfortable option. It takes 2 or 3 days with stops at Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge.
  • Bus: Supratours runs direct buses from Marrakech to Merzouga (about 12 hours).
  • Hire car: Gives you flexibility, but the mountain roads require experience.

From Fes to Merzouga

The distance is about 460 km and the journey takes around 7 hours. Your options are:

  • Private tour: It takes 2 or 3 days with stops at Ifrane, the Cedar Forest, the Ziz Valley and Erfoud.
  • Bus: Supratours offers a direct service from Fes to Merzouga.
  • Flight + transfer: Fly to Errachidia and take a 4x4 transfer (1.5 hours).

Is it worth stopping at Ait Benhaddou?

Absolutely. It's a UNESCO World Heritage kasbah and the setting for films such as Gladiator. A must on the route from Marrakech.

Do you have to get up early to see the sunrise in the desert?

Yes, sunrise over the dunes is an unforgettable experience. The tour includes an early start with a camel ride or a walk on the dunes before breakfast.

What does the desert tour include?

It includes: private air-conditioned transport, driver/guide, hotel/riad accommodation, a night at a desert camp, breakfasts and 24h assistance.

Do I need to book in advance?

We recommend booking at least 1 week in advance, especially in high season (spring and autumn). The camps have limited capacity.

What clothes should I bring to the desert?

Comfortable clothes, layers for the cold nights, closed shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a light jacket for sunrise.

Is it cold in the desert at night?

Yes, desert nights are cold even in summer (10–15 °C). In winter it can drop to 0 °C. The camps have blankets and heating.

Is the desert camp safe?

Yes, completely safe. The camps are in controlled areas, with local staff and good hygiene. There are luxury camps with private bathrooms.

Is there WiFi in the desert?

Luxury camps have limited WiFi. Standard camps have no connection. Enjoy disconnecting, or buy a SIM card in Merzouga.

Can I charge my phone in the desert?

Yes, all the camps have electricity to charge your devices. Bring your plug adapter.

What is there to see on the way to the desert?

Lots of must-see stops: the Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley, the Todra Gorge, the Cedar Forest and the Ziz Valley.

Can the route be done in winter?

Yes, it's an excellent time. Daytime temperatures are pleasant. It's cold at night but the camps have heating. Avoid July–August because of the extreme heat.

Are there shared tours or only private ones?
